A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye; it can be in one eye or both and are very common as you get older.
There are over 180,000 cataract surgeries performed annually in Australia, making it the most common surgical procedure. As such, the waiting list for surgery in public hospitals for cataract surgery can be up to 365 days.
Symptoms of cataracts
When a cataract first appears, most people do not experience too much vision disability; however, cataracts can gradually progress and lead to vision loss over time. Symptoms of cataracts include;
- Cloudy or blurry vision
- Colours look faded
- Difficulty seeing well at night
- Lamps, sunlight, or headlights seem too bright
- Seeing a halo around lights
- Double vision (this sometimes goes away as the cataract gets bigger)
- An increased need to change the prescription for your glasses often
